Erich B. Groos, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Groos is a native Nashvillian who has returned to practice ophthalmic surgery in his home city. He assumed the practice of L. Rowe Driver in 1994, and subsequently partnered with Ira A. Shivitz to form Cornea Consultants of Nashville. He brings to Nashville and these practices advanced techniques in corneal transplantation, high risk cataract surgery with lens implantation and more recently laser vision correction.

Dr. Groos supplemented his extensive knowledge and experience with corneal disease and surgery with training dedicated to develop excellent results in LASIK and PRK. Under the tutelage of Richard Lindstrom and David Hardten at the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, Dr. Groos has developed superior techniques in laser vision correction, which deliver high rates of success for patients in his care. In addition he adds careful preoperative screening and aggressive postoperative attention to potential complications to create a high level of safety for each patient he encounters.

Dr. Groos graduated valedictorian of Montgomery Bell Academy before leaving as a National Merit Scholar to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Princeton University. While at Princeton, he rowed for two national Championship Lightweight Crew teams. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University, followed by a year of general medical internship in Ann Arbor, Michigan. From there he traveled to the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a department consistently ranked among the top ten in the nation. In his final year Dr. Groos was selected chief resident by his peers.

A fellowship in cornea and external disease at the University of California, Davis then followed. Here he learned the art of advanced diagnosis and surgical/medical treatment of complicated anterior segment eye problems. His mentors, Mark Mannis and Ivan Schwab, are among the most respected cornea specialists in the world.

Dr, Groos is an ophthalmologist, certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Medical Association. Ira A. Shivitz, M.D.
Dr. Shivitz is an ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and external disease and practicing in private practice here in Nashville since 1984. His experience runs the gamut from sight-threatening corneal infections to sight-restoring surgical procedures of the cornea and anterior segment. With fellowship training in cornea and external disease at the Baylor College of Medicine, he has successfully treated hundreds of patients with severe damage to the cornea as well as prevented severe vision loss in countless others.

More recently Dr. Shivitz has turned his skills to the surgical correction of near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism. His early career experience with radial keratotomy at the Arrowsmith Eye Institute taught him to respect the power of surgery both to correct and to complete vision. With this background of medical and surgical experience, he has developed a prudent and cautious approach to the evaluation of patients considering laser refractive correction. Dr. Shivitz can easily recognize a difficult case as well as respond appropriately and swiftly in the event of an unexpected downturn. This combination of prudence and skill has led to high rate of success with both LASIK and PRK.

Educated in New York and receiving an undergraduate degree, magna cum laude in biology, Dr. Shivitz then earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University. Following a year of general medical training, he trained in the Department of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine as a resident and then cornea fellow under the tutelage of David Paton and Dan Jones. At Baylor he was honored with a fellowship in corneal disease from the Eye Bank Association of America. While an undergraduate in New York he received a Myasthenia Gravis Research Fellowship and undergraduate Honor Awards in both mathematics and calculus.

Dr. Shivitz is an ophthalmologist certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Medical Association. He is chief-of-staff of the Department of Ophthalmology at Centennial Medical Center. He is an active member of the board of local charitable groups, including The Care Center and Kids on the Block, for which he recently chaired the major fundraising event Comprehensive Cherish. Dr. Shivitz is a perennial supporter of the Guide Dog Foundation and Prevent Blindness Tennessee, the latter through participation in "Operation I Care" program for children.

His clinical interests include, but are not limited to: excimer laser refractive surgery, corneal transplantation, cataract extraction and lens implantation, excimer laser therapeutic surgery, diagnosis and treatment of severe corneal and scleral infections, and difficult contact lens fitting for irregular corneas (following RK, PRK, and LASIK, Keratocunus, trauma, etc.)
